WHY CB

Carbono Biodiversity is a new vision for the regeneration of nature, and the participation of community.

Setting A New Standard In The Carbon Market.

More than carbon
Carbono Biodiverso stands out by offering a viable option for businesses and individuals genuinely committed to supporting nature-based and socio-economic carbon sequestration solutions. Investments contribute not only to carbon capture but also to biodiversity conservation, the strengthening of local communities, and the promotion of social sustainability.

Transparency through technology
The protocol is supported by a fully transparent online registry and real-time satellite-based monitoring, ensuring accountability for both carbon compensation and the long-term impact of the project. Investors can track the tangible outcomes of their investments, providing them with confidence in their commitment to environmental stewardship.

A fully adoptable protocol
The Carbono Biodiverso protocol is fully scalable and was created to be adopted and replicated by other NGOs in their territories. Carbono Biodiversity Workshops offer NGOs full support in its deployment.

Accessible to more landowners
Global carbon markets often exclude small and medium-sized landowners, so limiting their access to carbon finance. Carbono Biodiverso eliminates this barrier, enabling landowners of all sizes to participate. This inclusive approach not only broadens the impact of carbon sequestration projects but also ensures fair and equitable access to financial benefits.

“The State of Querétaro has become a climate champion with public policies that promote awareness and social participation, as well as the regeneration of forests and wildlife refuges.”

Credible and traceable carbon compensation
By prohibiting carbon credit trading, the protocol ensures that every offset purchase directly contributes to tangible, on-the-ground restoration, preserving the integrity of carbon compensation efforts. This approach allows investors to track the measurable impact of their investment, reinforcing their commitment to environmental stewardship.

Built from the bottom up Carbono
Biodiverso is designed and implemented based on local knowledge and ecological needs. Unlike bureaucratic carbon programs developed without direct engagement with project sites, this protocol is rooted in hands-on experience. Instead of applying standardized solutions that may not suit biodiversity or the communities responsible for its stewardship, it takes a tailored approach that aligns with the unique environmental and social context of the region.

Guaranteed fair payments to landowners
The protocol mandates that at least 80% of carbon compensation revenues go directly to local landowners, ensuring that management fees remain minimal. This stands in contrast to traditional voluntary carbon markets, where a significant portion of funds is absorbed by administrative costs, often leaving landowners without the fair and consistent payments promised.

Agile short-term contracts
Annually renewed contracts offer landowners financial security while safeguarding them and future generations from long-term obligations. These one-year agreements also ensure that carbon inventories are regularly assessed, with any reversals addressed through a 10% buffer fund, maintaining the integrity of the carbon compensation process.

How It’s Regulated:
Working To A Strict Framework.

Forest owners who participate in Carbono Biodiverso are those whose forests meet the eligibility and additionality requirements of the protocol. The protocol outlines a series of activities required for forest regeneration, which include excluding cattle grazing from within the forest, a major cause of degradation in Mexico as well as other activities to permit natural regeneration. These activities include prohibiting tree harvesting, banning the use of fire, requiring measures to prevent and combat forest fires, reporting any pest outbreaks, or diseases in a timely manner, and regularly monitoring the parcel to ensure the absence of threats and the presence of natural regeneration. The Carbono Biodiverso protocol establishes rigorous standards to ensure its full accountability and effectiveness as a viable nature-based solution.

  • The lands involved in the project must be forest lands.
  • The project proponent must be a civil society organization with knowledge of the region and its activities.
  • The civil society organization must have at least three years of experience in the project area, or, in the case of a new organization, the personnel must have a minimum of three years of experience in the region.
  • If the project involves community participation, safeguards must be implemented to ensure social, gender, cultural, and participatory equity.
  • The project must comply with all relevant local laws and regulations.
  • The protocol includes social safeguards, such as obtaining free, prior, and informed consent from stakeholders and ensuring the equitable distribution of benefits within the community.
  • The project must demonstrate additionality, meaning it generates carbon benefits that would not have occurred without it.
  • The baseline for carbon accounting is based on existing forest carbon stocks, with all additional carbon stocks eligible for offset production.
  • The protocol specifies limits on which carbon reservoirs can be included. The living biomass of trees is mandatory, while biomass from the understory, downed or dead trees, dead leaves, forest floor material, and soil organic carbon are optional. If the proponent can justify and provide default factors for carbon capture from these additional reservoirs, they may be incorporated into the carbon accounting.

How Is It Financed?

Two ways – businesses (uber) + obligatory + obligatory who choose the seal

The state of Querétaro’s dedication to the protection of the Sierra Gorda has rightfully earned them global recognition as environmental leaders in Mexico. Over the years they have formed a strong alliance with Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda and together devised and implemented Carbono Biodiverso, to ensure that emissions compensation from companies in the state of Querétaro goes into the hands of those carrying out vital environmental services, the forest owners. To add true economic value so putting true economic value In 2022 the state of Querétaro introduced a regulation that companies operating in the state must pay an Atmospheric Gas Emissions Tax. Companies now have the option to either pay the tax or apply for the Querétaro Seal and compensate their respective direct or indirect emissions. Companies committed to protecting the environment can choose to participate in offsetting their footprint through the Querétaro Seal and receive a certificate. This can be achieved by acquiring compensation units for emissions generated through projects that quantify their emissions reductions or carbon (C) and GHG removals included in the State of Querétaro’s Compensation Projects Registry.

“The seal seeks to make us aware of environmental care, establish a methodological guide for fixed sources, in order to quantify, reduce and offset the greenhouse gas emissions generated, as well as identify those carbon reduction and absorption projects”

– Marco Antonio del Prete Tercero, head of the Secretariat of Sustainable Development (SEDESU).
