ABOUT

Carbono Biodiverso Stands Guardian Of The Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve Safeguarding Its Rich Biodiversity, Communities And Also The Future Of Our Planet.

Our Vision

Carbono Biodiverso is a new vision for the regeneration of nature, and the participation of community. It is founded on the principle that, to reduce carbon in our atmosphere, forests that effectively hold and sequester carbon, capture water and must be protected. Threats to forests need to be eliminated, and to achieve this, we need to establish a connection between economic development and the preservation of forest ecosystems.

Developed by Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda (GESG) in consultation with local landowners and supported by Secretaría de Desarrollo Sustentable (SEDESU), Carbono Biodiverso, is a pioneering carbon compensation model that aligns corporate sustainability efforts with regional environmental protection and socio-economic development. A unique combination of mitigating climate change, sequestering carbon and regenerating the natural heritage of Mexico.

“If we remove the human pressure, nature, in spite of everything, still has the capacity to heal itself.”

Roberto Ruiz. Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda.

Implemented in Sierra Gorda, Querétaro, Carbono Biodiverso pays local forest owners to remove their cattle. It ensures fair compensation for landowners while promoting effective carbon sequestration and forest conservation. Since the implementation of Carbono Biodiverso Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda (GESG) has witnessed the return of near extinct species, tree species and the restoration of complex ancient forest ecosystems.

The protocol has already issued and retired thousands of carbon offsets, demonstrating its effectiveness and potential for national expansion. The hope is that other governments, both subnational and federal will follow our proven example, looking to local initiatives in devising public policies in the interest of local biodiversity and its communities.

Pulling Together In A Crisis.

We have witnessed a remarkable convergence of allies dedicated to the creation and implementation of the protocol. Carbono Biodiverso represents a powerful integration of local knowledge, cutting-edge technology, ecological science, ancestral wisdom, public policy, and private sector collaboration, all united by a shared commitment: a proven strategy for nature regeneration and inclusive community participation. The successful deployment of Carbono Biodiverso would not be possible without the vital contributions of its diverse and dedicated stakeholders.

Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda I.A.P. (GESG) is a civil society organization created as a response from local citizens to the rapid environmental deterioration of the Sierra Gorda national park. For over 30 years, it has worked with communities, government and allies to promote regional sustainability and become the driving force behind the Carbono Biodiverso protocol and its development.

Open Forest One of the key contributors is software designer Open Forests, who is responsible for the local protocol methodology database system created and developed by GESG . With a forestry and social justice, background and social ensure transparent reporting and long-term satellite-based monitoring. Open Forests are experts in the design and development of software and maintaining of the GESG system for the traceability and transparency of the Biodiverse Carbon Registry.

SEDESU, Carbono Biodiverso is the product of a thriving partnership between Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda and the Secretaría de Desarrollo Sustentable de Querétaro, Together they uphold the mutual understanding of local needs together with recognition for total accountability and transparency. This collaboration has resulted in the launch of a state-driven regulation called the Querétaro Seal, a local carbon tax system where Querétaro companies can offset through local carbon projects in the Sierra Gorda biosphere.

Viva Sierra Gorda is critical in bringing together vital partnerships between technology companies and the Carbono Biodiverso protocol, from managing the carbon unit payment platform to overseeing the implementation of Openforest’s mapping software that traces and verifies all project data. Viva Sierra Gorda is also responsible for the fundraising that can make such impactful alliances a reality.

Apala Group plays a fundamental role in securing and linking clients to Carbono Biodiverso. Recently Uber Planet Mexico formed a strategic alliance with Apala Group and announced its commitment to the regeneration of the country’s natural heritage by joining the Carbono Biodiverso’ project.
